Ganga Aarti Experience: A Complete Visitor's Guide

The Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat is widely regarded as one of the most spectacular religious ceremonies in the world. Here's everything you need to know.

What is Ganga Aarti?

Aarti is a Hindu ritual of worship using fire. The Ganga Aarti is a grand ceremony performed to honor the sacred Ganges River, held every single evening without fail — rain or shine, 365 days a year.

When and Where

Location: Dashashwamedh Ghat, Varanasi (10-minute walk from our homestay)
Evening Aarti: Begins at sunset (approximately 6:30-7:30 PM, varies by season)
Morning Aarti: 5:30 AM — a more peaceful experience

What to Expect

The Setting

The ghat fills with hundreds (sometimes thousands) of devotees and tourists. The air is thick with incense smoke, marigold flowers float on the dark water, and the sound of bells and conch shells fills the night.

The Ceremony

7 young priests in orange robes perform the synchronized aarti simultaneously. They hold large brass lamps with multiple wicks and make sweeping motions while chanting Sanskrit prayers. The entire ceremony lasts about 45-60 minutes.

Photography

Photography is allowed and the lighting is dramatic. For the best shots, consider arriving by boat (you can hire a rowboat for ~₹200-300/hour).

Tips for First-Timers

1. Arrive 30-45 minutes early for a good viewing spot

2. Book a boat for the best aerial/water-level view

3. Dress respectfully — covered shoulders and legs

4. Keep your valuables safe — it gets very crowded

5. Carry some cash for flowers, boats, or donations

6. Stay for the entire ceremony — the finale with fireworks (on special days) is spectacular
